Foreign Minister congratulates Maximilian Schell on Cross of Merit

Vienna, 14 February 2008 - Today, Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik congratulated Maximilian Schell on the bestowal of the Cross of Merit by the Federal Republic of Germany. "A world star between Carinthian mountains and Hollywood, Maximilian Schell has set standards in his profession as an actor, director and producer. He has achieved everything he could wish for. Indeed, his performance as an actor was recognised with an Oscar, and he still continues to fascinate his audience, both in film and on TV," stated Plassnik.
After the Nazis seized power in Austria, Schell’s parents fled to Switzerland. Maximilian Schell studied history of art, German literature, drama and music at the Universities of Basle, Zurich and Munich before deciding to become an actor. According to Plassnik he is "a cosmopolitan who creates a very special tie between Germany, Switzerland and Austria." In 2007, Schell directed the operetta "Wiener Blut" at Austria’s Mörbisch Festival. Maximilian Schell is holder of the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art, First Class.
