videorecorder.pngAlthough it might not instantly jump into someone's mind when thinking about film makers and motion pictures Austria has a lively scene of producers and directors. Many internationally known movies were directed by Austrians. Some of them even won Oscars.



Barbara Albert (1970)
The Austrian film-maker becameknown in Austria through her movie “Nordrand”.


Franz Antel (1913 - 2007)
The Austrian veteran film-maker became famous for his K.u.k. and Bockerer movies.


Elfi von Dassanowsky (1924 - 2007)
The youngest woman admitted toVienna’s Music and Arts Academie became famous as the only Austrian woman, who received the Women’s International Center Living Legacy Award. She rejected the participation at the Nazi organizations and lived from this moment on in the USA. 


Andrea Maria Dusl
(1961)
Dusl became famous after receivinga lot of famous European movie awards.


Fritz Lang
(1890 - 1976)
The Austrian film maker was activein expressionistic movies and he became known for his movies “Metropolis” and “M” before emigrating to America.


Otto Preminger (1906 - 1986)
Preminger was twice nominated for the Best Director Academy Award. He spend a part of his life in the United States. His movies were during his life seen as very controversy, since they had forbidden topics like rape, drugs and homosexuality.


Stefan Ruzowitzky (1961)
Since this Austrian film director won an Academy Award with his picture "The Counerfeiters" in 2008, Stefan Ruowitzky ranks among the most renowned directors in Austrian cinematography.


Josef von Sternberg (1894 - 1969)
He emigrated from Austria already as a child. In America his movies became admired by famous actors like Charlie Chaplin. He worked with Marlene Dietrich and become famous mostly by his early gangster movies.


Götz Spielmann (1961)
is one of the most important contemporary Austrian directors. in 2009 his film "Revanche" was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.


Billy Wilder (1906- 2002)
After his emigration to the US,Wilder became famous for movies like “Ninotchka”. He won an Academy Award and is seen until today as one of the most brilliant filmmakers.

Fred Zinnemann (1907 - 1997)
Zinnemann was born in Vienna,studied in America and died in England. He received 4 Academy Awards and is famous for movies like “From here to Eternity”, “High Noon” and “ A man for allseasons”.
