-      Ilsa Aichinger (1.November 1921)
The Austrian writer became famousfor her work “Das vierte Tor”, where she describes her persecution by theNazis.

-     Peter Altenberg (9.March 1859 – 8.January 1919)
The Bohemian writer and member ofthe modern “Young Vienna” movement, became famous for his poets andobservations about people. He was called a coffee house poet, because he spendmost of his time in the coffee house “Central” and wrote there most of hisworks.

-      Jean Amery (31.October 1912 – 17.October 1978)
Amery became known through his work“At the Mind’s Limits: Contemplations by a survivor on Auschwitz and itsrealities”, where he describes the tortures he had to endure during the secondWorld War.

-      Ludwig Anzengruber (29.November 1839 -10.December 1889)
His breakthrough was “The Priestfrom Kirchfeld”, which was first produced in Theater an der Wien.

-      H.C. Artmann (12.Juni 1921 – 4.December 2000)
Artmann became famous throughwriting in the specific Viennese slang.

Also known under the pseudonym PaulAntschel he was one of the most famous poets and translators after the SecondWorld War.

Michael Denis was an Austrian poetand bibliographer.

-      Heimito von Doderer (5.September 1896 –23.December 1966)
Heimito was a famous Austrian writer, who survived imprisonment during the war in Siberia.

She is seen as one of the mostimportant German-language writers of the 19th century.

Stefan Griebl alias Franzobel is a famous contemporary Austrian writer.

The Austrian pacifist, who was theco-founder of the German peace movement, received the Nobel Prize for Peace in1911.

He was a famous Austrian historian,journalist, actor, philosopher and critic.

-      Franz Grillparzer (15.January 1791 – 21.January1872)
Grillpazer was one of the mostprominent Austrian dramatic poets. His most famous works are “deas goldeneVlies” and “The Fortune and Fall of King Ottokar”.

The Austrian poet was already recognizedat a young age.

Handke is one of the most famous avant-garde Austrian novelist and playwright.

-      Fritz Hochwaelder (28.May 1911 – 21.October 1986)
The Austrian playwright, who had toflee to Switzerland during the Second World War, was famous for his prose andmoral themes.

-      Hugo von Hofmannsthal (1.February 1874 – 15.July 1929)
Hugo von Hofmannsthal became reallyfamous in Austria. He was a poet, novelist, dramatist, narrator and essayist.His most famous works are “Elektra” and “der Rosenkavalier”. 

Oedoen von Horvath (9.December 1901 – 1.June1938)
He was one of the most importantGerman-language authors of the 20th century. His most famous work is“Jugend ohne Gott” (=Youth without God). He was killed by falling tree branch.

-      Wolf Haas (14.Dezember 1960)
Haas is a prominent Austrian murdermystery writer.

-      Ernst Jandl (1.August 1925 – 9.June 2000)
He was an Austrian writer and poet.

-      Elfriede Jelinek (20.October 1946)
Elfriede Jelinek is a very famousAustrian feminist playwright and novelist. She received the Nobel prize in Literature in 2004.

-      Franz Kafka (3 July 1883 – 3.June 1924)
Kafka is one of the most prominentGerman-language fiction writers of the 20th century. His most famousworks are “the Metamorphosis” and “the Trial”.  You either love his works or hate them.

-      Ludwig von Koechel (14.January 1800 – 3.June1877)
The Austrian musicologist andwriter is best known for cataloguing Mozart’s works .

-      Karl Kraus (28.April 1874 – 12.June 1936)
The Austrian writer and journalistis seen as the most important German-language satirist of the 20thcentury. He became well-known for his own newspaper “Die Fackel” ("The Torch").

-      Alexander Lernet-Holenia (21. October 1897 –3.July 1976)
He was an Austrian novelist andpoet.

-      Robert Menasse (21. June 1945)
Menasse is an Austrian writer, whobecame known for his sarcastic writing style.

-      Gustav Meyrink (19.January 1868 – 4.December1932)
The Austrian author became famouswith his novel “the Golem”.

-      Rosa Mayreder (30.November 1858 – 19.January1938)
She was an Austrian author andfeminist and became famous for her works about feminity. Austria celebrated herby depicting her picture on the 500 Schilling banknote.

-      Friederike Mayroecker (20.December 1924)
She is an Austrian contemporary poet.

-      Frederic Morton (5.October 1924)
Morton is an Austrian writer, whohad to emigrate to the United States during the Second World War. He worked for several famous American periodicals.

-      Robert Musil (6.November 1880 – 15.April 1942)
The Austrian writer became famous though his unfinished long novel “The Man without qualities”.

-      Guenther Nenning (23.December 1921 – 14.May 2006)
Nenning was a prominent Austrian author and journalist.

-      Johann Nestroy (7.December 1801 – 25.May 1862)
This very famous Austrian playwright is sometimes called the “Austrian Shakespeare”.  His most famous works are the comedies“Lumpaci vagabundus”, “Der Talisman” , “Der Zerrissene” and “Einen Jux will er sich machen”. 

Christine Noestlinger (13. October 1936)
She became famous for herliterature works for children, which addressed various needs of children. Hermost famous work is the “Fiery Frederica”, which she illustrated herself.

-      Andreas P. Pittler (21.Novermber 1964)
Pitller became famous for his biographies about politicians and other celebrities.

-      Ferdinand Raimund (1.June 1790 – 5.September 1836)
Raimund is a very famous Austrian dramatist. His masterpieces include “Der Alpenkoenig und Menschenfeind” and “der Verschwender”.

-      Christoph Ransmayr (20.March 1954)
He is a contemporary Austrianwriter.

-      Rainer Maria Rilke (4.December 1875 – 29.December 1926)
Rilke is seen as one of the greatest German-language poets of the 20th century. His most famous verse sequences are “Sonnets to Orpheus” and “Duino Elegi ”.

-      Peter Rosegger (31.July 1843 – 26.June 1918)
The Austrian poet nearly received the Nobel prize in 1913 and is therefore seen as a hero-like figure in Styria.

-      Joseph Roth (2.September 1894 – 27.May 1939)
The Ausrtian novelist became famousfor his works “Radetzky March” and “Job”.

-      Ferdinand von Saar (30.September 1833 – 24.July 1906 )
The Austrian novelist and playwright was one of the most important German-language writers of the 19thcentury.

-      Leopold von Sacher-Masoch (27.January 1836 –9.March 1895)
The Austrian writer was renowned for his stories about life. However, his popularity is based on the fact thatthe term masochism is derived from his name.

-      Felix Salten (6.September 1869 – 8.October 1945)
Salten became famous through hiswork “Bambi”, on which Disney based its movie.

-      Arthur Schnitzler (15.May 1862 – 21.October 1931)

His works (exp. “Der Weg insFreie”) were standing out through the strong resistance against anti-Semitism.

-      Werner Schwab (4.February 1958 – 1.January 1994)
Schwab is known for his specificstyle, which is very hard to translate into other languages.

-      Jura Soyfer (8.December 1912 – 16. February  1939)
Soyfer was an important political journalist. In the Buchenwald concentration camp he died one day after his release was granted.

-      Manes Sperber (12.December 1905 – 5.February1984)
He became famous for his trilogy“Like a tear in the ocean”.
 

-      Fritz Spiegl (27.January 1926 – 23.March 2003)
As a child he was sent to England,where he invited a small model aero plane, which was then published in printedmedia. This way he became a famous journalist.

-      Adalbert Stifter  (23.October 1805 – 28.January 1868)
The Austrian writer was very famousfor his depiction of landscapes in his works.

-      Bertha von Suttner (9.June 1843 – 21.June 1914 )
The Austrian pacifist was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for Peace.

-      Franziska Tausig (1895 – 1989)
The Austrian author survived the Second World War by emigrating to England and then Shanghai.

-      Friedrich Torberg (16.September 1908 – 10.November 1979)
He became famous for his work“Schueler Gerber”.
