towers.pngIn its long history Austria brought forth a number of very successful architects. They built the magnificient buildings and palaces of the imperial capital Vienna, but also a great number of modern architecture renowned around the world.




Raimund Abraham
(1933)
Abraham is the architect of theAustrian Culture forum in New York City. He lives already more than 30 yearsin the USA.


Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach (1656 - 1723)
He was the most famous architectofthe Baroque time. Erlach designed the Karlskirche and the Schoenbrunn palace.


Joseph Hardtmuth (1758 - 1816)
The Austrian architect invented the pencil and the chalkboard.


Franz Hardtmuth (1832 - 1869)
The famous Austrian architect created the specific yellow, which is now used for pencils.


Karl Freiherr von Hasenauer (1833 - 1894)
Together with Gottfried Sempler he designed the Kunsthistorisches and Naturhistorisches Museum and the Burgtheater.


Coop Himmelb(l)au
was founded by Wolf Prix,Helmut Swiczinsky and Michael Holzer. It is an architectural design firm inVienna,
which now also resides in the USA. Its most famous building in Austria is the re-adaptation of the old Gasometer.


Hans Hollein (1934)
Hollein designed the Haas-Haus opposite of the Stephansdom in Vienna.


Adolf Loos (1870 - 1933)
The Austrian architect is mostfamousfor the American Bar in Vienna. In America he is famous for his entry into the Chicago Tribune competition in 1922.


Richard Neutra (1892 - 1970)
Neutra is seen as one of the most important modern architects. He emigrated to the USA 1923.


Gustav Peichl
(1928)
He designed the EFA Radio Satellite Stationin Alfenz Austria.


Jakob Prandtauer (1660 - 1726)
Prandtauer designed the Monastery Church of Melk in Austria.


Rudolf Schindler
(1887 - 1953)
In 1914, Schindler emigrated to the USA. His modern style became famous after his death.


Margarete Schuette-Lihotzky
(1897 - 2000)
The first Austrian female architect became famous for her invention of the Frankfurt Kitchen and her involvement inthe Widerstand against the Nazis.


Harry Seidler (1923 - 2006)
During the Second World War, Seidlerfirst emigrated to the USA and then to Australia. He studied in themost famous universities of America and became popular after designing the first Bauhausfor his parents in Sydney, the Rose Seidler House.


Otto Wagner (1841 - 1918)
The Austrian architect designed several Jugendstil buildings in Austria.Furthermore, he belonged to the “Vienna Secession” artistic group and published the textbook “Modern".
