Josef Abel (1768 - 1818)
The Austrian painter and scetcher became famous through his painting of the Austrian emperor Franz Joseph.

Friedrich von Amerling (1803 - 1887)
the outstanding portrait painter of the court became most famous for his picture of Francis the Second and "The Oriental".

Ferdinand Bauer (1760 - 1826)
He was a botanical illustrator, who fascinated everybody with his skills for details. After his trip to Australia the Cape Bauer was named after him.

Herbert Bayer (1900 -1985)
The Austrian graphic designer tried to create an universal typeface.

Albin Egger-Lienz (1868 - 1926)
Alin concentrated more on rustic and historical paintings, especially on showing the struggles of workers.

Valie Export (1940)
The modern Austrian artist combines video and computer technology with other artistic features. She received the Oscar Kokoschka Award in 2000.

Bernd Fasching (1955)
Just recently Fasching created the project "Westwerk" in the Stephansdom.
 
Hans Figura (1930)
He was one of the founders of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, the Arts Club and the Pinotarium. He called his style the "hidden prime of styles".

Joseph von Fuehrich (1800 - 1876)
The Austrian Painter concentrated his paintings mostly on romantic and religious art.

Richard Gerstl (1883 - 1908)
He focused his expressive art mainly on the psychological aspect of human nature. It is said, that his affair with the wife of Arnold Schoenberg lead to his suicide.

Bruno Gironcoli (1936)
The very famous Austrian modern artist fascinates people by his large futuristic sculptures.

Ernst Haas (1921 - 1986)
The Austrian photographer was a member of the Magnum Photos Agency. He is famous for his specific photography style and innovations in the area of light, form and color.

Rudolf Hausner (1914 - 1995)
Hausner was also a co-founder of the Vienna school of Fantastic Realism. He is famous for his psychoanalytical realistic style and has been criticized a lot by the church for this approach in painting.

Gottfried Helnwein (1948)
His works are often considered controversial. Through his realistic style expressed mainly by watercolors he creates very special pictures. The main topics of his paintings are political and historical issues connected with anxiety. Most of his pictures include children. The most famous one is "Epiphany I".

Alfred Hrdlicka (1928)
The Austrian Sculpturist is most famous for his "Memorial against war and fascism" on the Albertina Platz in Vienna.

Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928 - 2000)
Hundertwasser called his painting theory "transautomatism". In fact, he created a new genre in art. His paintings and later buildings are of specific uneven forms and very bright colors. His most famous work is the "Hunderwasserhaus", a building in Vienna.
 
Gustav Klimt (1862 - 1918)
The Austrian symbolic painter is one of the most known painters of the Vienna Secession movement. He used real gold in his paintings. The most famous one is the "Kiss". His paintings belong to the most expensive in the world, being worth more than 100 million dollars each.

Oskar Kokoschka (1886 - 1980)
Kokoschka is one of the most famous expressionists of Austria.

Hans Makart (1840 - 1884)
The "Makartstil" influenced all Vienna at that time. Makart was famous and people adored him. His pictures showan astonishing aestheticism through great colors (he used cement in his pictures).

Inge Morath (1923 - 2002)
The Austrian-born photographer was the first female member of the Magnum Photos. Her photos became well-known during her lifetime. She emigrated to the USA, where she died of cancer.

Hermann Nitsch (1938)
The controversial Austrian actionist painter creates his works with blood, sometimes even slaughtered animals on white backgrounds.
 
Eva M. Paar (1977)
She created her style "Relaxed Formation" by her own. She portrays people through lines, which differ in width, and are first making out an form, when seen from distance.
 
Arnulf Rainer (1929)
The Austrian painter is internationally known for his abstract modern art.

Johann Michael Rottmayr (1656 - 1730)
Rottmayr was one of the first notable Austrian baroque painters.

Egon Schiele (1890 - 1918)
Schiele is seen as one of the most famous and most controversial expressionist painters in Austria. His works portrayed very young girls naked, what was seen by many as pornographic. Although he was often accused, he gained great popularity. He died of the Spanish flu with his wife, who was pregnant.

Moritz von Schwind (1804-1871)
Schwind got his inspiration from music, mainly from Schubert. His paintings depict mostly the life of bourgeoisie.

Herwig Maria Stark (1967)
Stark is a contemporary Austrian painter, who has specialized into painting persons and faces.

Carola Unterberger-Probst (9.May 1978)
She is an internationally known artist in digital art.

Aloys Wach (1892 - 1940)
The Expressionist showed famous motifs in a totally new way.

Ferdinand Georg Waldmueller (1793 - 1865)
His most famous picture is the portrait of Beethoven.

Olga Wisinger-Florian (1844 - 1926)
She was a famous representative of the impressionism.

Fritz Wotruba (1907 - 1975)
Wotruba is the most notable of the 20th century Austrian sculptors. His most famous work is the monument "Man, condemn war!"

Erwin Wurm (1954)
The Austrian artist tries to capture important questions through "One Minute Sculptures". He was the inspiration to the Red Hot Chili Peppers song "Can't Stop".
