Plassnik: "The UN is an important engine of support for women worldwide"
Vienna, 4 March 2008 - Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik met today with Dr. Asha-Rose Migiro. The Tanzanian lawyer and former foreign minister has been the Deputy of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon since February 2007. Plassnik: "This meeting was important to me for many reasons. Vienna is the only UN Seat in the European Union. Under the influence of a necessary new multilateralism, the United Nations is increasingly becoming the competence centre for international peace work, and Asha-Rose Migiro is an important ally for me in strengthening the rights of women worldwide and in the context of the United Nations."
Plassnik: "The UN Secretary General can rely on our full support. This is also hold true for his Deputy in her effort to reorganize and further strengthen the UN structures in the area of women’s rights. I also thanked Ashe-Rose Migiro for the most recent UN initiative for another campaign against female genital mutilation. This campaign aims to encourage especially governments in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia to put an end to this still widespread and inhumane ritual."
The Foreign Minister emphasized the need to increase the number of women in executive positions in the UN. Plassnik: "We must not and do not intend to do without these experiences and talents."
Plassnik emphasized to the UN Deputy Secretary General the importance of implementing Security Council resolution 1325 on the role of women in armed conflicts. Plassnik: "Resolution 1325 was a turning point. It was adopted in 2000. "After ten years, we should have a conference organized by the UN, which will take stock of the concrete impact both in detail and on a global scale."
Migiro heads a large part of the management and administrative tasks of the UN Secretariat and is also in charge of development issues. She is participating in the high-ranking dialogue forum on the topic of "United Nations System-Wide Coherence: The Next Steps" organized by UNIDO in Vienna.
