PLEASE NOTE:
Visa information is for U.S.-residents only. If you reside outside the U.S. please contact the responsible Austrian Embassy or Consulate in your country.

Citizens of the United States in possession of a valid U.S.-passport, are not required to obtain a visa for Austria for a period of up to three months if traveling as a tourist.

If you are a resident of the U.S. but do not hold U.S. citizenship, a visa may be required.

Please note:
Applications must be submitted in person if you reside in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, or Delaware. In some cases, personal appearance may be required regardless of where you reside. Visa can only be processed once all supporting documents have been received. Applications will be returned if supporting documents are missing!

PLEASE NOTE: We only reply to inquiries concerning residence permit, passport, visa, social security, etc. within the Consular jurisdiction of the Embassy. There are four Austrian Consulates General in theUnited States. As each one serves clients from a particular region,please contact the appropriate office for assistance. PART 1 


ALL applicants, unless otherwise stated, must submit the following ORIGINAL documents:
  • Valid passport or Refugee Travel Document- either must be valid at least three (3) months beyond date of travel. Please note: Refuggee Travel Documents are accepted only if you are unable to obtain a national passport. A written statement to that effect by the issuing authority of the Travel Document is required.
  • Two recent regular size passport color photographs - must be identical, regular size passport photographs
  • Copy of complete roundtrip ticket(s) or confirmed itinerary showing exact dates of travel
PLEASE NOTE: Do not purchase your ticket unless you fulfill all other requirements. The embassy is not responsible for any loss or penalties incurred!
  • Valid U.S. visa with original form I-94 and I-20 or IAP-66 (if applicable) or original of Alien Registration Card of Form I-512
  • Visas of countries you intend to visit after your stay in Austria
  • Non-refundable visa fee (see fee schedule) - payable at the time of application either in cash or Postal Money Order.
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay in Austria, e.g. recent personal bank statement (must show your name and address), travelers checks, etc.
  • Letter of continued employment including income statement
  • Confirmed hotel reservation or confirmation of tour, if applicable
  • Proof of travel health insurance (a minimum medical coverage of US $ 50,000.00 required) 

PART 2


Any applicant visiting friends or family in Austria must also submit:
  • Original, notarized "Verpflichtungserklärung*. Fax copies will not be accepted.
  • If the person you intend to visit is not an Austrian citizen, then a copy of his/her national passport containing a valid Austrian visa, "Meldezettel", as well as proof of sufficient income or funds must be produced together with the "Verpflichtungserklärung".
* The "Verpflichtungserklaerung" may be obtained from the local authorities in Austria or from this office
 
PART 3
Applicants holding a passport of one of the following countries, must apply for an airport transit visa, when changing planes in Austria:

Afghanistan | Bangladesh | Congo | Eritrea | Ethiopia | Ghana | Iran | Iraq | Liberia | Nigeria | Pakistan | Somalia | Sri Lanka 
Important: If the applicant has an overnight stay in Austria and/ or a second airport transit through another EU country, the applicant must apply for a regular -not airport- transit visa (See Part 1 for requirements).

Processing
Processing time for the "Schengen" visa and regular transit visa is up to three (3) weeks.

Visas can only be processed once all supporting documents have been received.

Do not call the Embassy to inquire about the status of your application. Your passport with the visa will be returned to you as soon as possible. Otherwise the Embassy will contact you if additional documentation is required.
