Spindelegger condems incident in Ebensee

New York, 11 May 2009 - On the sidelines of the UN Security Council meeting on the Middle East, Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger expressed his shock over the incident during the commemorations in the former concentration camp in Ebensee. "Such provocations are unbearable and must not be tolerated. I unreservedly condemn this", said Spindelegger. Moreover, the Minister reaffirmed the clear words expressed by the Interior Minister and welcomed the immediate measures introduced by the security authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The Foreign Minister also expressed his clear rejection for the incident in Serfaus in Tyrol. He believes that this is an - unacceptable - isolated case, particularly since the President of the Jewish community for Tyrol and Vorarlberg said that she had never heard of any difficulties in the past, and that Jewish visitors have always been well received in these regions.

Spindelegger: "Such incidents damage Austria’s international reputation and cast a shadow on Austria as a tourist destination. We must not allow our self-image of an open and hospitable country to be undermined by an appalling discrimination of our fellow citizens."
