Foreign Minister Spindelegger welcomes UN Security Council statement on Myanmar

UN Security Council unanimously adopts statement on the verdict against Aung San Suu Kyi

spindelegger-uno-new-york.jpgVienna, 13 August 2009
- "The voices of indignation and disappointment over the verdict against Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi continue to be unmistakably clear. Today, in a unanimously adopted statement, the Security Council once again urged the government of Myanmar to release the political prisoners and begin a serious dialogue with Aung San Suu Kyi", said Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger. "It is clear that this is the condition for holding free and fair elections in Myanmar in 2010."

Spindelegger regards the Security Council statement adopted today as an important signal. "The fact that all 15 members of the Security Council actually managed to agree on a common statement demonstrates how alarming the verdict against Aung San Suu Kyi and the political repression in Myanmar has now become for the highest UN body."

Austria, currently represented in the Security Council as a non-permanent member, has clearly supported the plan for convening an extraordinary session to discuss the verdict against Aung San Suu Kyi and the issuing of an unequivocal yet also unanimous statement by the Security Council.
