Humanitarian Emergency Aid Provided by Austria
“In this most difficult time our deeply felt sympathy goes out to the families of the many thousands of people who have lost loved ones and to the many who have suffered injuries from this horrific catastrophe,” stated Foreign Minister Dr. Michael Spindelegger and Minister of the Interior Dr. Maria Fekter in light of the terrible earthquake in Haiti. In the meantime the humanitarian emergency aid provided by Austria totals 1.3 million Euros (1.9 million US Dollars).
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is contributing 600,000 Euros in emergency aid provided by the Fund for Foreign Disaster Management designated for the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) and the United Nations Flash Appeal; as well as to the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) of the United Nations. Austria is continually working closely together with the United Nations and the European Union in their international efforts.
The Ministry of the Interior is providing material goods in the amount of 200,000 Euros, including tents for families and emergency health kits. We want to quickly help the people in the disaster area and, together with other countries and aid institutions, implement immediate measures for easing the suffering, “ said Minister of the Interior Dr. Maria Fekter.
Another 500,000 Euros will be provided by the City of Vienna for tents, medical necessities and food as well as for rebuilding schools, kindergartens and housing.
Austria has reacted quickly to the request for assistance and has sent Vorarlberg’s expert on emergency assistance Arthur Weber to the area to support the EU civil protection team in Haiti.
