Austria and the United Nations |
|
|
Austrian foreign policy gives high priority to its activities in the United Nations and is fully committed to the UN’s objectives and principles.
Since becoming a member of the United Nations in 1955, Austria has put particular emphasis on peacekeeping and conflict resolution, and has become one of the largest troop contributors for UN operations. It supports and works constructively towards continued disarmament and non-proliferation and the ban of landmines. The promotion of and respect for international and humanitarian law as well as human rights have always been at the centre of its UN activities. This includes the support for the International Criminal Court. In the social and economic field Austria focuses on sustainable development as well as the environment.
As host to one of the headquarters of the United Nations Austria feels particularly attached to the reform of the organisation.
Other priorities include humanitarian assistance, the fight against terrorism as well as drug and crime.
