SEPTEMBER

The centre of attention in September lies just as in August in markets and feasts, but is thus marked by the return from the mountain pastures and partly already by thanksgiving (which, however, is often celebrated in October).
One of the most important cattle markets of Austria and biggest local fairs of Carinthia is held on September, 1 at Bleiburg, the “Wiesenmarkt mit Freyungsauftragen”; Graz holds its third “Fetzenmarkt” (rag-fair) of the year; …
On important date of the minority of Croatians in Burgenland is the third Sunday in September, called the Croats’ Sunday. The last Sunday in September has been dedicated to all the ethnic minorities living in Austria by the church, called the “foreigners’ Sunday”. Its purpose is to create a mutual understanding between different cultures.
Particularly fascinating incidents, especially for children are the annual return of the cattle from the mountain pastures (“Almabtrieb”) and Thanksgiving (“Erntedank”). If you are interested in seeing an original return from the mountain pasture, there is one taking place on the 14th of September, with adorned cattle and music at Egg and Hohenems (Vorarlberg). The whole spectacle is definitely worth a visit.
On the fourth of Sunday in September, a thanksgiving procession carrying a remarkable harvest crown and several statues moves through the pilgrimage place of Maria Luggau (Carinthia).
