The 26th of October is a very special and dear date to the Austrian: It is the Austrian National Holiday. On the 15th of May in 1955, the treaty that was to give Austria its freedom was signed. On the 25th of October 1955, the last foreign soldier left the Austrian federal territory, which made October 26, the first day of Austria’s freedom.
On this special day the Federal museums are open free-of-charge, the Austrian Open-Air museum at Stübing, near Graz (Styria) offers an “Experience Day” (“Erlebnistag”) and military music is played in various places. Also, a lot of people made it their tradition to take part in fitness-runs arranged by the Federal Sport Organization.
Gaining in popularity quickly every year is Halloween, celebrated on the 30th of October.
