New York City, NY: CONCERT BERNHARD LANG: "THE COLD TRIP" PERFORMED BY ALEPH GUITAR QUARTET & DAISY PRESS

The ACFNY is pleased to present the Aleph Guitar Quartet and vocalist Daisy Press in a program featuring two US premieres, one of which is Bernhard Lang's "The Cold Trip Part 1" - a completely new musical approach to the classic of Schubert's "Winterreise". It was commissioned by the Austrian Cultural Forum New York and the Berliner Festspiele. Lang speaks of "explosion" and "detonation" when recycling, reworking or over-writing historical music. In this case, with his looping, editing and sampling techniques he creates a palimpsest over the original sounds and structures of these romantic songs. Out of the "Winterreise" comes a meta-composition - "The Cold Trip".

New York City, NY: LITERARY PANEL ELSEWHERE - DORON RABINOVICI AND TESS LEWIS IN CONVERSATION WITH GEORGE PROCHNIK

  • Austrian Cultural Forum New York

In his fast-paced and heart-wrenching novel, Doron Rabinovici stirs up concepts of origin, identity and belonging as he describes the shifting, twisting relationships in a Jewish family. Old skeletons are dragged out of cupboards, new secrets are closely observed. By the end of this gripping story, only one thing is certain: home is wherever you feel most like a stranger. The novel, which was translated by Tess Lewis, was shortlisted for the 2010 German Book Prize. Join the author and Tess Lewis in discussion with George Prochnik on June 20th at 6:30 PM to gather more insights into the writing process and the (hi)story of it all.

In 1939 she made her way with her family to Ecuador where many Jews found refuge. Here she began a new life. Washington, DC: Lecture | Luba Sterlikova & Erich Keel: Vienna 1900; Architecture, Music and Theater

The first half of the talk will look at a selection of theatres in different nineteenth-century styles, from Neo-Classical to Art Nouveau, with special attention to the Viennese firm of architects Fellner & Helmer. Between 1870 and 1914, they built nearly fifty spaces for the performance of operas, plays, and classical music. No atelier in Belle Époque Europe was as successful as the team of designers led by Austrian-born Ferdinand Fellner and his partner, Hermann Helmer, born near Hamburg. From Zurich to Odessa, from Hamburg to Sofia, their architectural vision responded to the taste and spirit of an increasingly prosperous and confident middle class. The talk will address the reality of architecture, and touch on the decorative programs that enriched the symbolic and illusionary appeal of Fellner’s and Helmer’s performance spaces. Major artists contributed to the success of the architectural firm.

New York City, NY: ACFNY SUPPORTED | EXHIBITION BERNHARD AMMERER "INTERFACE"

In his first solo show in the United States at 532 Gallery Thomas Jaeckel, Bernard Ammerer depicts a private domain of desolate landscapes and vaguely restless figures that would border on the surreal if it didn't feel so eerily familiar. Across the exhibition's dozen canvases—all from this year and last—we see small cliques of physically and psychologically isolated people at uneasy rest or in frantic motion; cloud-filled skies looming serenely over flat, featureless, stark-white plains; and lone travelers in obscure territories that are shrouded in fog, reduced to cartoonish black silhouettes, or completely replaced with generic words—Wood, Field—that diminish nature to a worthless and empty abstraction.
