New York: ALAS, THE NYMPHS (Recommended by ACFNY)

  • Brooklyn Academy of Music, Fishman Space 321 Ashland Place Brooklyn, NY, 11217 United States (map)

Written and directed by John Jahnke
Original score by Fennesz

The ancient Greek myth of Hylas—about an Argonaut presumed to have been abducted by water nymphs—is resuscitated by theatrical auteur John Jahnke and New York-based company Hotel Savant as a bacchic parade of fragmented poetry, psychosexual intrigue, and dance-theater-cum-art-installation. With music by Austrian electronic composer Fennesz, Alas, The Nymphs is a lurid meditation on eros and power, submerging contemporary consciousness in mythic guilts and desires.

Director, Playwright and Designer John Jahnke has developed work at BAM Next Wave, The Park Avenue Armory, The MacDowell Colony, The Watermill Center,Abrons Art Center, The Orchard Project, The Public Theater, The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Art on Air, Performance Space 122, 3LD Art and Technology Center, The Hermitage, Chashama and Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, among others. He is the Artistic Director of the theatre company Hotel Savant, which has numerous Henry Hewes Design nominations for Set and Production Design. Jahnke has served as Associate Producer of Media and Performance Art and the Museum of Modern Art/MoMA. He is a former opera and ballet student with a visual arts degree from the California Institute of the Arts Fine Arts program.
