ACF DC: EXHIBITION OPENING/LECTURE | LAURA SPINADEL: CAMPUS WU - A HOLISTIC HISTORY

  • Austrian Cultural Forum 3524 International Court Northwest Washington, DC, 20008 United States

Since October 2013, the area between Vienna Fair and Prater belongs to the students and teachers of the University of Economics and Business of Vienna, as well as to everybody who is curious and open to discoveries of all kind. Within four years, six exceptional buildings were erected on 90.000 square meters, each of which carries the thumbprint of a renowned international architect. The edifices are situated within a carefully planned, multiplex public- and greenery space concept.

Although the challenges were high, Laura P. Spinadel and her team from BUSarchitektur developed and implemented a unique master plan for the Campus WU. The master plan predetermined a clear yet loose frame for the architectures that were defined by different building plots, allowing a maximum in design freedom. This frame included the surroundings as well as traffic routes, light, sun and wind. Due regard was given to the design of the open spaces, referring optimally to the future users and their needs. The master plan communicated with all stakeholders and proved its social expertise. It was no rigid, unchangeable construct. It was a måasterpiece that never foregrounded itself, yet it was ever-present as it sensitively initiated and supported the entire process.

Laura P. Spinadel, born in 1958 in Buenos Aires, went to a German School and later studied architecture in Buenos Aires. From 1984 to 1986 worked at the institute of city planing at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (Austria) before she became a freelance architect. Until 1990 Spinadel taught at the faculty of architecture and was director for foreign relations and cooperation at the university of Buenos Aires. She traveled and still travels the world for projects, lectures and counselling activities. Her various engagements so far led her to Spain, Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Germany, Austria, USA, Hungary, Poland, Israel, Italy and Tansania.
In 1986 - together with fellow architect Claudio J. Blazica - she founded the architecture office "BUSarchitektur" in Buenos Aires. They moved to Vienna in 2003, where their tireless commitment won them numerous prizes, such as the Otto Wagner Prize for urban development. In 2008 they won the call for proposals to design the campus of the new Vienna University of Economics and Business together with "BOAnet", which they founded in 2004 in collaboration with Hubert Marz and Sebastian Soukup. "BOAnet" is principally involved in project development, marketing, multimedia and communication strategies.
