THERAPY FOR A VAMPIRE/DER VAMPIR AUF DER COUCH
2014, DAVID RÜHM, AUSTRIA/SWITZERLAND,
87 MIN. WITH TOBIAS MORETTI, JEANETTE HAIN.
Screenings on SAT, Mar 19th 8:15PM & THU, MAR 24th 6:00PM
This new twist on the vampire comedy centers on Sigmund Freud’s iconic couch, which becomes a solace outside the coffin for elegantly weary bloodsucker Count Geza von Kozsnom. Obsessing over an affair 500 years in the past, the count riles his vain vampire wife, who longs to see her own image. Enter the struggling artist Viktor, whom Freud pays to sketch his patients’ more lurid sexual fantasies, and his lover Lucy, a dead-ringer for the count’s long-gone inamorata. A love triangle soon becomes a quadrangle, and it’s all set in stylish 1930s Vienna. In German with English subtitles. Courtesy of Music Box Films. DCP digital. (BS)
THE LAST SUMMER OF THE RICH/DER LETZTE SOMMER DER REICHEN2014, PETER KERN, AUSTRIA,
92 MIN. WITH AMIRA CASAR, NICOLE GERDON.
Screenings on FRI, Mar 25th 8:15PM & TUE, MAR 29th 6:00PM
A hint of Fassbinder, a juicy pinch of early Ulrike Ottinger, and a huge scoop of satire will land this raunchy comedy of manners on a few guilty pleasure lists. New German Cinema actor/director Kern (RIP 2015), known for his work with Wenders and Fassbinder, opts for high camp with this wild tale of Hanna, a leather-clad Viennese heiress and fashion maven who runs her family’s corporate empire and a chain of brothels, while scheming to off her ex-Nazi grandfather. Amid plentiful lesbian sex, there’s a sharp sting of social critique to Hanna’s brutal seduction of a teenage would-be model, and her pursuit of a sly-like-a-fox nun. Note: for adult audiences. In German with English subtitles. Courtesy of Austrian Films. DCP digital. (BS)
