Firearms & Ammunition
Individuals who reside outside the European Union and have not been issued an Austrian or European Firearms Pass, must apply for a permit in order to receive an authorization to bring weapons and ammunition into Austria.
You may apply for the permit at the Embassy (fee: €42; if paid in $, amount is to be paid in cash or via money-order).
The following documents must be submitted with your application:
- proper documentation of your trip (length, aim, plane ticket etc.),
- a valid passport
- a valid firearms pass/permit issued by the authorities of your country of residence
- a statement of good conduct (Sheriff's letter, criminal record clearance letter) issued by the relevant authority.
Further documentation might be required. This will be decided on a case-by-case basis.
The permit gives you the right to bring firearms and weapons into Austria, but it does not confer the right to carry the firearm on you at all times. In addition, the firearm must not be loaded at the time of entry and ammunition must be stored separately.
Sport and hunting rifles do not require a permit, provided that they are not semi-automatic/automatic.
