Study Programs in Austria

Institutions of Higher Education
The language of instruction is usually German. Many institutions, however, also offer classes in other languages.
Most universities offer the following study programs:
- Bachelor program: 6 – 8 semesters
- Master program: 2 – 4 semesters
- Doctoral program: minimum: 6 semesters
Moreover, there are:
- Diploma programs (so-called "Diplomstudiengang"): 8 – 10 semesters
- Doctoral program : 4 semesters

Admission

Entry & Residence
Citizens of other EU/EEA countries neither need a visa nor a residence title. They merely need to register with the residence authorities within 3 months after their arrival in Austria.
Citizens of non-EU/EEA countries need a residence permit if the intended duration of the stay exceeds 6 months.
In order to be granted a residence title, the student will need to prove that he or she is in possession of the financial means necessary to sustain a living. This may be done e.g. by submitting a confirmation issued by your future employer in Austria. Proof of the following monthly income will be required of you:
- up to 24 years of age: €432.27 per month
- over 24 years of age: €783.90 per month (as of 2010)

Costs & Grants
Many Austrians and citizens of EU/EEA countries are not required to pay tuition fees. For further informaion, please visit: oead.at/tuition-fees
Average monthly expenses for students residing at a student hall of residence are approximately €800.

Students from non EU/EEA countries and from the new EU member countries (exceptions: Malta and Cyprus) are only allowed to work in Austria for a limited period of time and may do so only if in possession of a work permit.
