Health Insurance

Although the cost of medical services and hospitalization is still considerably lower in Austria than in the United States, health coverage is highly recommended.

In general, individuals employed in Austria and their immediate family members are covered by public health insurance. In addition, individuals who receive a pension from the Austrian Social Security Administration and who reside in Austria are also covered by public health insurance.

After establishing residency in Austria, a small portion of the pension is being withheld for your health insurance. Special regulations apply to self-employed individuals.
Individuals not automatically covered by public health insurance may obtain public health coverage at reasonable monthly rates. Please be aware that there will be a six-month waiting period before coverage will actually be provided.
