Austrian contribution to the reconstruction of parts of L’Aquila destroyed by the earthquake
Rome/Vienna, 26 June 2012 – The cooperation agreement for the reconstruction of parts of the Italian city and commune of L’Aquila destroyed by an earthquake in the year 2009 was signed in the Austrian Embassy in Rome today. The Dean of the Faculty for Education, Arts and Architecture of Danube University Krems, Renate Hammer, signed the contract in the presence of the Italian Minister of Territorial Cohesion, Fabrizio Barca, the Mayor of L‘Aquila, Massimo Cialente, and Austrian Ambassador Christian Berlakovits, and handed over the book of plans in a festive ceremony to the City of L’Aquila, the capital of the Abruzzo province.
The contract and plans are the basis for the implementation of concepts and strategies for the reconstruction of part of the historic old city quarter of L’Aquila developed by the Danube University Krems over the past few years under supervision of the leading Italian architect, Prof. Roberto Pirzio Biroli. The people of L’Aquila contributed pro-actively to the concepts that are based on Biroli’s experience in this field. “This is an important Austrian contribution to the redevelopment and revitalisation of the capital of the Abruzzo that was struck so severely by the earthquake”, Ambassador Berlakovits said.
