Spindelegger: “A Great Personal Achievement for Christoph Waltz”
Vienna, March 8, 2010. Following a brief wait of some mere 15 minutes after festivities at the Academy Awards commenced, the wait for Christoph Waltz was already over. The 53-year old Austrian received the first Oscar of the night from Spanish actress Penelope Cruz for best supporting actor in his role as Hans Landa in Inglorious Basterds. “I congratulate Christoph Waltz on the Oscar win and I am very happy for his great personal achievement,” Mr. Spindelegger happily remarked in an initial reaction. This Oscar, but also the nominations of Michael Haneke and Christian Berger, testify to the great potential of Austrian film. “I am delighted that Austria’s artists are recognized internationally for their achievements”, Mr. Spindelegger said.

New York, 1 March 2010 - On the occasion of the art fairs taking place in New York every year during the first week of March, the Austrian Cultural Forum New York is organizing a two-day symposium on the return of art works and objects stolen during the Nazi era, in close cooperation with the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Arts, and Culture and the Israelite Religious Community in Vienna.

UN Security Council adopted first Resolution under Austrian Presidency |
As one of the ten elected non-permament members, Austria assumed the monthly rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for November 2009. As its first Resolution under the Austrian Presidency, the UNSC unanimously adopted Resolution 1894 on the protection of civilians in armed conflicts, a proposal convened by Austria. The Security Council Session, chaired by Austrian Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger, was also attendecd by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
