Feb 13: Plassnik: "We need a global alliance against human trafficking" Print E-mail
Foreign Minister pays tribute to honorary commitment of Emma Thompson and Ricky Martin

plassnik__thompson.jpgVienna, 13 February 2008 – "May the Vienna Forum give rise to a worldwide movement against human trafficking," said Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik in today’s welcome address to the Vienna Forum against Human Trafficking. "Women, men and children" we are all neighbours in the global village and we must act with determination against one of the worst forms of human rights violation. Let’s call a spade a spade: this is about slavery in the third millennium. In contrast to the trade in human beings of earlier centuries, however, it is mostly a hidden phenomenon. It is therefore necessary to raise awareness, both here and throughout the world. It is a major problem and it is becoming increasingly acute," continued Plassnik.

"This Forum is a unique opportunity for a new global partnership in the fight against human trafficking. There are different experiences and different possibilities for commitment. We must bring them together to help victims of human trafficking and to put a stop to this grave violation of human rights and human dignity," continued Plassnik.

The Foreign Minister appealed to her audience to "make use of the new form of multilateral diplomacy in the 21st century. Our efforts should not be restricted to the elaboration of UN conventions but should also include the joint mobilisation of civil society, non-governmental organisations, the media and artists. Politicians and international organisations may enact laws to curb the scourge of human trafficking. What is decisive, however, is the work of individuals who take action instead of turning a blind eye."

Plassnik paid tribute to Emma Thompson and Ricky Martin, who were present at the address. "The actress Emma Thompson is ideally cast for the fight against human trafficking, with a woman’s specific sensitivity, thoughtfulness and energy, while Ricky Martin with his humanitarian commitment can be a role model for young people and particularly young men," stated Plassnik. The singer’s campaign motto is "Join us: it’s time to give a voice to millions of victims of this modern form of slavery," which, according to Plassnik, gives a perspective to people in apparently hopeless situations. Among other things, Martin’s "Call and Live" campaign offers a hotline for victims of human trafficking. The phone line operates in Peru, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador and Nicaragua.

"All of us assembled here today have recognised the urgent need for joint action. Let’s form a new international alliance and invite as many people as possible to participate in it," concluded Plassnik.
