Secretary General for Foreign Affairs Linhart, opens Vienna Conference on Arms Trade Treaty (ATT)

Monday, 20 April 2015 – The Secretary General for Foreign Affairs, Michael Linhart, together with the UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Angela Kane, in the Vienna Hofburg opened an international expert conference on the Arms Trade Treaty today. 

In front of close to 300 participants from 100 states, Linhart underlined, that the Arms Trade Treaty, which entered into force on 24 December 2014 only 20 months after its adoption, is a success story of international diplomacy. “Austria has for a long time advocated the creation of international rules for the trade with conventional weapons and documents her continuous support also with the offer to establish the secretariat of the Arms Trade Treaty in Vienna”, says Linhart.

For two days diplomats, experts and representatives of civil society and industry will discuss the question, how the Arms Trade Treaty can be implemented in the best manner and in which institutional framework it can work and be further improved.
