Austria-U.S. Strategic Dialogue

The annual Strategic Dialogue between Austria and the United States on December 4, 2023, was marked by a strengthened transatlantic cooperation on matters of security policy, human rights, democracy, and EU-relevant topics. Ambassador Gregor W. Kössler, the Political Director of the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, hosted the dialogue and welcomed Ambassador James C. O'Brien, the Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs at the US Department of State, as well as US Ambassador to Vienna, Victoria Reggie Kennedy.

In the concluding joint Austrian-American statement, Austria and the United States reaffirmed the importance of transatlantic cooperation in addressing global issues. They reiterated their unwavering support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as their shared solidarity with Israel in the face of Hamas terror attacks. The joint statement expressed concern about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. In this context, the fight against antisemitism, anti-Muslim hatred, racism, and potential actions against foreign interference through disinformation campaigns were also addressed.

At European level, the significant role of the OSCE in regional security was emphasized. Both sides expressed support for the future EU membership of Western Balkan countries. Regarding bilateral matters, the thriving economic relations between Austria and the US were discussed, including topics related to apprenticeship training.

The Strategic Dialogue aims to further deepen the bilateral strategic partnership in the coming year.
