Visit of Federal Minister Korinna Schumann to New York

In town for the United Nations Commission on Social Development, Federal Minister for Labor, Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection, Korinna Schumann met with Austrian scientists working in the field of Artificial Intelligence to discuss applications in the health sector. She also visited Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was able to participate in an exchange with renowned Austrian professors Peter Palese and Florian Krammer before receiving an impressive tour through the extremely busy operating rooms (Mount Sinai Hospital conducts about 500-700 surgeries every day).
In the evening, Federal Minister Schumann welcomed a group of Austrians who had recently completed their respective citizenship processes as descendants of persons persecuted by the National Socialist regime, before meeting with a larger number of Austrians living in New York.
In a meeting with a local non-profit organization dedicated to finding comprehensive solutions to homelessness the next day, the Federal Minister learned that about 90,000 New Yorkers spend the night in emergency shelters. The city’s efforts to end homelessness was also discussed in Federal Minister Schumann’s conversation with NYC Commissioner for Social Services Molly Wasow Park.
With Commissioner Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez of the NYC Department for the Aging, Federal Minister Korinna Schumann engaged in a lively discussion on how to combat ageism, how to make the city more accessible for the elderly, and how to address loneliness among the elderly.
