Honoring 80 Years Since the Liberation of Austria: Commemorative Visit and Wreath-Laying Ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Austria and the end of the Second World War on Austrian soil, the Ambassador of the Republic of Austria to the United States, H.E. Petra Schneebauer, and Defense, Military, Naval and Air Attaché, Major General Norbert Huber, led a commemorative delegation to Arlington National Cemetery on May 24, 2025.

The solemn visit began with the observation of the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier—a tradition that embodies the enduring gratitude and respect for those who gave their lives in service to their countries. Following this moving ceremony, Ambassador Schneebauer, Major General Huber, Colonel Andreas Hillinger, and Chief Warrant Officer Walter Schmuck participated in a formal wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb, paying tribute to the countless service members who perished in World War II, many without known graves.

Austria remains profoundly grateful to the United States for their role in the liberation of the country. This symbolic act served not only to honor the fallen, but also to reflect on the enduring transatlantic partnership between Austria and the United States—founded in the aftermath of war and strengthened through decades of shared commitment to peace, democracy, and international cooperation.

The delegation continued also visited the 3rd Infantry Division Memorial, which honors the first Allied forces to reach Austrian territory during the final stages of the war. It was the soldiers of this division who played a pivotal role in liberating Austrian towns and securing freedom for its people in the spring of 1945.

In a final tribute, respects were paid at the gravesite of Major Audie Murphy, one of the most decorated American combat soldiers of WWII. Major Murphy’s courage and dedication to the Allied cause remain a symbol of the sacrifice made by so many in the fight against tyranny.
