ThreadCycle: Diplomatic Wardrobes and Sustainable Fashion Futures
On May 22, we welcomed guests to ThreadCycle: Diplomatic Wardrobes and Sustainable Fashion Futures — an inspiring evening exploring how fashion can reflect the world we aspire to create.
In her opening remarks, Ambassador Petra Schneebauer reflected on the deeper meaning of diplomatic attire:
“Dressing for the role is about more than appearance — it’s about respect, responsibility, and the values we choose to embody. In a world facing climate change and supply chain inequality, looking good can’t mean looking away.”
The panel featured female leaders in the sustainable fashion industry who are redefining fashion through innovation, ethics, and impact:
• Nadine Schratzberger, founder of Montreet, a trailblazer in sustainable Austrian outerwear
• Gabrielle Clary, World Bank consultant on corporate responsibility and inclusion
• Ashley Reinhart, founder of Paloma Vintage Design, curating timeless, sustainable fashion in DC
• Sarah Bamberger, Director of the Austrian Cultural Forum, championing Austrian fashion as a tool in cultural diplomacy
Moderated by Finja Draxler, Director of the Austrian Press and Information Service, the conversation explored the power of clothing as both personal expression and a tool of cultural diplomacy.
The event also highlighted Austria’s leadership in ethical design, from biodegradable materials to couture that cares — with support from visionary brands like Lenzing, Getzner Textil, and Eva Poleschinski.
We were also proud to partner with Dress for Success Washington, DC, a vital organization that empowers women to achieve economic independence by providing professional attire and development tools. As they remind us, they are about “much more than simply a new outfit” — they help women build the confidence, agency, and vision needed to shape their futures and contribute to a more equitable and sustainable world.
The evening concluded with a sustainable clothing swap and a taste of Austria, inviting guests to embrace style with purpose.
Thank you to all our fantastic panelists and everyone who joined.
