In celebration of National Travel and Tourism Week, this week's #AustrianExplorer takes us to the Amethyst Welt Maissau, one of Lower Austria's hidden gems—quite literally. The site sits above the world’s largest amethyst vein and is among only a handful of places worldwide where high-quality banded amethysts can be found.

Since medieval times, amethysts have been surrounded by myth and meaning. In 1350, naturalist Konrad von Megenberg is believed to have credited the stone with the power to drive away evil thoughts and bring good reason. Whether legend or belief, its deep violet glow has fascinated rulers and civilizations from pharaohs to kings and emperors for centuries.

Today, visitors can explore the Amethyst Gallery and descend into the heart of the deposit to see the natural formation up close. The experience continues in the Gemstone House with minerals from around the world, including meteorites and lunar rock, plus hands-on activities like gold panning and a treasure cemetery. PRO TIP: From March 2026 to the end of 2027, the special exhibition “Crystal Skulls – Key to Hidden Worlds?” adds an extra layer of intrigue, showcasing crystal skulls from different cultures and their spiritual, mythological, and religious significance.

Afterward, the Amethyst Park, café, and shop offer the perfect place to unwind and take a piece of Maissau home.
