EU Open House 2026

On May 9, 2026, thousands of visitors stopped by the Embassy of Austria in Washington, D.C. on the occasion of the annual EU Open House to discover Austria’s rich culture, history, and picturesque tourist destinations. Throughout the day, guests were invited to take part in Ländler dance lessons, while enjoying a taste of Austria with apple strudel by Little Austria, Schnitzel sliders by District Forks, Manner wafers, and Red Bull.

At our information table, visitors had the opportunity to explore highlights in the Austrian federal states (Bundesländer), from the Alpine landscapes to the capital city of Vienna, without leaving Washington, D.C. Younger guests enjoyed a dedicated arts and crafts station, where they built their own (Austrian-inspired) little ski figures, while woom bikes offered children the chance to experience Austrian innovation firsthand. Visitors could also have their bicycles repaired on site.

In celebration of the American Semiquincentennial, guests were invited to stroll through a curated exhibition highlighting the longstanding historic and cultural ties between Austria and the United States, particularly spotlighting the many Austrians who helped shape American life and culture — from architect and “mall man” Victor Gruen to Hollywood actress Hedy Lamarr.

In cooperation with our neighbors at the Embassy of Slovakia, visitors were invited to take part in an Austria-Slovakia-themed trivia quiz that encouraged them to explore both Embassies and test their knowledge of the two countries for the chance to win prizes generously provided by sponsors including Swarovski Kristallwelten and numerous Austrian museums. In addition, KWSelection hosted Austrian wine tastings for connoisseurs and casual wine lovers alike.

The day was filled with laughter, cultural exchange, and shared celebration of the longstanding Austrian-American friendship. We extend our sincere thanks to all guests, volunteers, partners, and sponsors who helped make this year’s EU Open House such a success, and we look forward to welcoming everyone again in 2027.
